Fried calamari

PRESENTATION

Fried calamari are a classic of Mediterranean cuisine, appreciated for their crispy exterior and tender interior. Traditionally deep-fried in oil, today we offer a lighter yet equally delicious version prepared with an air fryer. This innovative method allows you to achieve crispy and golden calamari with reduced fat content, making it ideal for those who want to maintain a healthier diet without sacrificing the pleasure of good food.

For an extra touch, you can add a pinch of chili powder to the flour mixture for a slightly spicy version.

INGREDIENTS

FOR ABOUT 4 PEOPLE
500 g of fresh or frozen squid rings
100 g of corn flour
50 g of all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon sweet paprika (about 5 g)
1 teaspoon garlic powder (about 5 g)
1 teaspoon salt (about 5 g)
Freshly ground black pepper to taste
Spray oil (preferably olive oil) as needed

PREPARATION

  1. Ensure the squid is well cleaned and cut into rings.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the all-purpose flour and semolina flour (optional).
  3. Add salt, black pepper, and paprika (optional) to the flour mixture and mix well.
  4. Coat the squid rings in the flour mixture, making sure they are well covered.
  5. Preheat the air fryer to 200°C (about 400°F) for about 3-5 minutes.
  6. Arrange the coated squid rings in a single layer in the air fryer basket.
  7. Lightly spray the rings with spray oil.
  8. Cook at 200°C for about 8-10 minutes, turning the rings halfway through and spraying them again with oil.
  9. Check the doneness: the calamari should be golden and crispy.
  10. Remove the calamari from the air fryer and place them on a plate lined with paper towels.
  11. Serve immediately, perhaps with lemon slices and a sauce of your choice.

STORAGE

In the refrigerator: If you have leftover fried calamari, let them cool completely at room temperature to avoid trapping moisture. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1-2 days.

TIP

Maintain crispiness: To reheat, avoid the microwave as it can make the calamari soggy. Use a preheated oven at 180°C (about 350°F) for about 5-7 minutes or until they are heated through evenly.
